Michigan Lighthouse Photo Workshop
The Lake Michigan Lighthouse Photography Workshop
September 11-13, 2020
Join Lerro Photography as we photograph some of the most famous lighthouses along the southern Lake Michigan shores. During the photo workshop, participants will learn how to photograph these scenes under several different lighting situations, including sunrise, sunset, and at night. Our special use permits allow us to be on the grounds after hours and give us rare opportunities to photograph the lighthouses under ideal conditions. During our night sessions, the milky way will be visible for the first couple of hours of the night. Then, the moon will rise and give the photographers an illuminated landscape and a whole new look to the scene.
The photo workshop will start at Little Sable Point Lighthouse with an afternoon, sunset and night photo session. We’ll then meet back up early in the morning in Ludington, MI where we will photograph the Ludington Breakwater Lighthouse at sunrise. As an added bonus, the coal fired steamship S.S. Badger will depart Ludington in the morning and pass next to the Ludington Lighthouse.
On Saturday afternoon, we’ll meet in Ludington State Park and drive out to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. Normally a 1.5 mile hike on sand is required but our permit will allow us to carpool 4wd vehicles out to the lighthouse. We will photograph the lighthouse at sunset and a night. As a bonus, the caretaker of the lighthouse is going to turn off the surrounding lights which will give us a much darker scene to photograph. We’ll return Sunday morning for sunrise photos at Big Sable as well.
During the day on Sunday, we will make our way south to photograph a number of Michigan’s famous pier lighthouses such as Holland Harbor, Grand Haven and St Joseph Lighthouses. A sunset and night session will be held at Grand Haven Lighthouse.
Please note that if the weather forecast calls for rain Saturday night, we will swap the Friday and Saturday night photo sessions with each other. In other words, we will photograph Big Sable Friday night into Saturday morning and then shoot Little Sable Saturday night. We will make that call by the Wednesday of the photo workshop.
