Colorado Fall Colors and Ghost Towns 2023 In October 2023, Lerro Photography ran a photo workshop of fall colors and ghost towns in southwest Colorado. The San Juan Mountains have a rich history of mining, railroading, and tourism. Our photographers spent several days learning how to take photos of these things. On the first afternoon, we drove south of Ouray into Red Mountain Pass to photograph several locations, including a reflection lake, a vista overlook, and the Yankee Girl Mine. We then traveled to the Dallas Divide overlook for sunset. Fresh snow fell the night before and was still around… [Read More]
Union Pacific Steam Shop Visit
Union Pacific Steam Shop Visit 2023 In early October of this year, I finally visited the Union Pacific Steam Shop in Cheyenne, WY. Known as “The Land of the Giants,” the shop is home to the Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 and the Union Pacific #844. Ed Dickens took a couple of us for a fantastic tour of the shop building, roundhouse, and turntable. I want to thank Ed Dickens for the red carpet treatment and tour of the facility.
Classic Pin-up on the Battleship New Jersey 2023
Classic Pin-up on the Battleship New Jersey In July 2023, Lerro Photography sponsored a two-day, vintage pin-up photo shoot on the Battleship New Jersey. Each day, our small group of participants got to photograph the lovely ladies in various parts of the ship. While shooting both inside and outside, I provided LED lights as well as posing suggestions and camera settings. The participating photographers were able to learn these techniques and practice their new skills throughout each day of shooting. On Saturday, we started off taking photos of the ladies with the ship in the background from the adjacent park…. [Read More]
WWII Reading Airshow and Night Shoot
WWII Airshow at Mid-Atlantic Air Museum 2023 In June 2023, Lerro Photography was hired to provide the lighting for the 3rd annual night photo session during the World War II Airshow at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, PA. The night session featured three planes, a Bell P-63 Kingcobra, a Stearman biplane, and an Aichi D3A1 Val replica. Before the night photo session started, the airport’s fire truck sprayed water around and in front of each plane to create a reflection. Each plane put on quite a show for the attendees by running their engines, allowing the photographers to capture… [Read More]
Outer Banks Lighthouses Workshop
Outer Banks Lighthouses Workshop 2023 In April 2023, Lerro Photography sponsored two separate photo workshops in North Carolina’s Outer Banks and Cape Lookout National Seashore. The first segment was two nights and three days on the Outer Banks. On the first evening, we photographed the Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station until sunset. From there, we took a break for dinner and a few hours of sleep before meeting at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at 2:00 am to take night pictures. Thunderstorms were moving in, so we had to move quickly. We did get about 20 minutes of Milky Way time before… [Read More]
California Lighthouses Workshop
California Lighthouse Photo Workshop In April 2023, Lerro Photography sponsored a five-day lighthouse photo workshop on the coast of Northern California. This photo workshop featured several special Fresnel lens lightings, exclusive access, and a two-night stay in a lighthouse keeper’s house. Our first lighthouse was Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, about three hours north of San Francisco in Mendocino County. I booked to have all of us stay two nights in the keeper’s house so we could photograph the lighthouse at night and be close to another lighthouse we planned to photograph. It was raining when we arrived at Point Cabrillo,… [Read More]
Hollywood Vintage Lighting Workshop
Hollywood Vintage Lighting WorkshopJanuary 2023 I have had many clients over the years ask me how I do the lighting setups for the Lerro Photography reenactments. This interest was a big factor in deciding to offer this particular new style of lighting workshop. I decided to keep the workshop small regarding participants because I wanted to make it a more personal experience and also because the space we were using was limited. I found a great Airbnb in Rockhill Furnace, PA, that had vintage charm and a style that was the perfect backdrop for our workshop. The workshop was… [Read More]

Norfolk & Western 611 Charter at the Strasburg RailroadNovember 2022 The 4-8-4 Norfolk & Western #611 was brought to the Strasburg Railroad in 2019 and has been pulling passenger trains on select weekends. Lerro Photography helped run a photo charter with the 611 in October 2019. In November 2022, Lerro Photography was again asked to help the SRR with a photo charter to help raise money for both the railroad and the locomotive. The two-day photoshoot consisted of the 611 pulling an all-red passenger train and featured photo sessions at sunrise, sunset, and a night session. Each of the photo… [Read More]
Old West Photo Shoot 2022
Old West Photo ShootNovember 2022 When someone thinks of the Old West, one imagines images of gunfights, the open range, cowboys with cattle, drinks at the saloon, and adventure. In November 2022, Lerro Photography sponsored an Old West-themed photo shoot at the Old Bedford Village in Bedford, PA. Over 20 reenactors, two horses, and nearly 40 buildings and structures made for a perfect backdrop for our photo shoot. All of our reenactors were hand-picked because they had original and/or accurate reproduction outfits, props, and guns. We do this so we can make sure the photo shoot is as accurate as… [Read More]
Oregon Steam Charters 2022
Oregon Steam Charters The 2022 Oregon Steam Charters featured two separate railroads: The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad and the Albany & Eastern Railroad. For our first photo charter, we spent two days at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad with the Polson Logging Co. 2-8-2 #2 and the Heisler Craig Mountain Lumber #3 as our motive power. Both days were planned to feature both locomotives, but due to mechanical issues, the Heisler didn’t join us until toward the end of the first day. The railroad fired up a third engine, McCloud Railway 2-6-2 #25, but unfortunately, that engine had mechanical issues… [Read More]
